JR Ranch and Othello Farm
We purchased the farm in Othello, Washington in the early 1990's which Roger and Ellie's son Jeff Schmidt manages. He developed an interest in cattle through his 4-H and FFA projects and helping his father on the farm. This experience has led to the development of a herd of over 1,000 cattle. We raise registered shorthorn cattle and registered angus cattle. There is an annual bull sale in the spring of each year and a club calf sale each fall. JR Ranch has produced many grand-champion bulls, heifers, and steers over the years. Roger and Ellie's three granddaughters and grandson are excellent ranchers and are part of the ongoing success of the cattle business.
In addition to raising beef in Othello, we grow much of the summer produce that we sell here in the store. If you've tasted one of our famous Athena melons, then you know how sweet and juicy the climate in Eastern Washington makes our fruit. We grow other varieties of melon including cantaloupe, honeydew, casaba, canary, and watermelon. Have you ever seen yellow-flesh watermelon? It is another one of our specialties that is unique and fun. If you plan on doing any canning, Sunny Farms is your source to get you started with quality produce for preserving. Tomatoes, pickles, corn, and okra are a few of the items we grow in Othello and sell by the lug or case at a great price. This way you can enjoy our flavorful produce all year 'round!
You may think of us in the fall when we have our pumpkins lined up on our roof. That is a tradition we've been doing for decades. All of the pumpkins we sell are grown by us in Othello. We offer a huge assortment of pumpkin varieties, both large and small size, as well as winter squashes. You and your family can pick a pumpkin that is "just right" for your Halloween jack-o-lantern.
Soft tree fruits such as peaches, plums, apricots and nectarines are not grown on our farm but we have built very close relationships with other farmers in Eastern Washington that allow us to directly purchase those items at a volume price. We extend that value to our customers and all of these fruits are available in summer for eating fresh or canning.
